The homeowner plans to update the exterior of this Salt Lake City home with several retaining wall projects and minor deck repairs. The first project involves replacing a failed five-foot CMU wall on the northeast side. We recommend large, interlocking concrete blocks (approx. 2 ft × 3 ft × 4 ft) keyed top and bottom to prevent sliding and ensure long-term stability. Next to this area is a short section under four feet high, which classifies as landscaping rather than a retaining wall. The client may rebuild this freely, provided it remains below that height.

A third project includes adding driveway space with a new wall up to eight feet high. This can be one engineered wall or two four-foot tiers spaced four feet apart, depending on city approval. On the south side, a new patio area will need a defined edge—preferably the same interlocking block system, though reinforced concrete would also work. The rear deck framing is acceptable with midspan blocking, but one cracked 2×12 joist should be sistered, and bridging on the right side secured with proper brackets. These updates will modernize the exterior while restoring safe, lasting support throughout the property.
